WATERING TIPS

Turf Grass in our climate is recommended to get 1 INCH of water each week. The news does a good job at reporting our rainfall totals. In most cases one hour of rain usually equals out to one inch of water. During our hotter and drier periods, you should try to water your lawn three times per week for about 20 minutes in each section. This will be enough to keep your lawn active and not be too stressed out.

If you have a sprinkler system a good strategy would be having it run Monday, Wednesday and Friday around 6 am. With larger sections being turned on for 20 minutes each. For the tree lawn and sides of your lawn 10 minutes in those sections should be enough, because in most cases they are smaller areas.

You DO NOT want to water during the heat of the day. If you were to water during the heat of the day, much of that water will evaporate before your lawn can benefit from it. If it is too hot outside, this could trigger the summer disease, Pythium that can cause significant damage to your lawn, along with other diseases that could arise. Also, you do not want to water at night if there is high humidity. If the grass has too much moisture overnight, this can also cause other lawn disease issues.

The best practice is to water early in the morning so that all watering is done before 10 am.
